Until his untimely death in 2008,
Omar Vega was one of the
strongest creative forces in
the first generation of the tango's
revival. He was known as a
salon dancer who created all of his
unique and innovative ideas on the
social dance floor, remaining "true"
to the essence of social dance,
before transforming them for
performance. Omar considered his
tango to be based in "natural,
sensual movement." He was also
internationally famous for his
extremely rhythmic style of
dancing milonga. This master of
improvisation, especially
appreciated for his musical
interpretation travelled extensively
in the last years of his life.
He was known as a careful and
charismatic teacher, and these
are the only full length instructional
tapes he ever filmed. For these
sessions he was accompanied by
Luciana Valle of Buenos Aires.
Int/Adv Tango with Omar Vega (V315)
Omar teaches a generous lesson of
more than twenty figures, carefully
breaking down and explaining the
dynamics of each. He covers
walking steps and turns. Each step
has his own uniquely creative
stamp of rhythmic variation and
humor. He demonstrates to music
throughout and there are two
studio performances. Filmed in
1998 in Buenos Aires. Produced,
edited, and translated by Daniel.
